The Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) is a private, independent, nonprofit-making think tank, established in Athens, Greece, in 1988. Its mission is to conduct policy-oriented research and provide policy makers, academics and the public at large with authoritative information and substantiated policy recommendations, so as to contribute to the development of evidence-based responses to major European and foreign policy challenges.
ELIAMEP’s expertise spans over a wide range of geographic and functional areas: EU institutions and policies; migration management, security, international relations and conflict resolution (with a special focus on the Balkans, the Black Sea, the former Soviet space, the Mediterranean/Middle East and Asia); transatlantic relations; democracy, human rights and civic participation; good governance and the rule of law; religion and culture; the role of the media in the era of fake news; energy and climate change.
ELIAMEP is committed to excellence; be it in open dialogue and policy deliberation, research, training and any other undertaking that falls under its mandate. International rankings of think-tanks put ELIAMEP at the top of the list among its counterparts in South Eastern Europe and in a very good position among European think-tanks. In December 2017, the Foundation was the recipient of an Athens Academy award for its long-time contribution to public dialogue and policy planning in its fields of expertise.
With a rather small but carefully selected team of researchers, ELIAMEP participates in more than 35 projects and collaborates with more than 300 institutions in Europe and worldwide (source: European Commission). ELIAMEP is the first Research Centre to host an ERC grant in Greece in the area of Social Sciences and Humanities. ELIAMEP ranked among the top 5 institutions, along with major universities, in the Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities sector in Greece, both in terms of number and value of the projects funded by the 7th Framework Programme, European Commission (source: Greek National Contact Point).
Next to conducting specific targeted research projects, the Foundation also undertakes various kinds of information and awareness-raising activities to promote the public debate, such as the production of publications, the provision of information to the media, the organization of conferences, training seminars and round-table discussions.
Ιn 2018 alone, ELIAMEP organized more than 52 events of all types and sizes, with the annual European Seminars being its flagship event.
Both nationally and internationally, ELIAMEP is regarded as a trusted institution that is fully independent and serves the promotion of an evidence-based public dialogue. ELIAMEP collaborates with key stakeholders in all fields of public life (government institutions at all levels, the NGO community, the media, universities and research centers, grant-making foundations, the private sector, etc.).
Experts from the Foundation are regularly invited to present an evidence-based view on the issue at hand. ELIAMEP is an active member of various international networks, such as the New Pact for Europe, Mercator European Dialogue, Euro-Mediterranean Study Commission (EuroMeSCo), European Policy Institutes Network (EPIN) and the Arab Reform Initiative.
In our effort to raise more awareness on our work and for the sake of transparency we have decided to publish annual reports, starting in 2006, including summaries of the main research tasks carried out, events, publications, networking activities, partnerships, fundraising and other actions implemented within the Foundation’s annual work programme.
